Halfway into its third year of existence, the Centre d'excellence pour la santé des femmes-Consortium Université de Montréal is heading into an exciting stage: its research program announced the results of its first projects, alliances and partnerships are being formed through various initiatives, and through its participation in public hearings on health services in Greater Montreal, CESAF made an important contribution to women's health. Thus, after having invested time, energy and resources to establish the organization and build a network of partners, the Centre now has the tools in hand to execute its mandate.

CESAF brings together a large group of individuals, including researchers from many disciplines, as well as people active in community organizations and the health and social services network. The participation of these partners enriches all of the Centre's activities and ensures the value of its work. In fact, the Centre's interest in collaborating with partners extends right across the nation. For instance, it joins forces with the Maritimes Centre of Excellence for Women's Health when making presentations at educational or scientific events and is working with the other Centres of excellence in Canada on a project examining health care reform.

    RESEARCH

In keeping with its mandate to promote research, the CESAF is currently funding more than10 studies conducted by researchers with renowned expertise, which will underscore the multiplicity and diversity of women's health-related experiences. Special interest will paid to three of the most vulnerable female population groups: natural caregivers, immigrant women and Aboriginal women. The term "natural caregiver" refers to women who provide support, assistance and care to a relative with health problems on a volunteer, non-professional basis.

Given the vastness and complexity of the field of women's health, the Centre is increasingly gearing its research and activities toward home care policies and programs, which play a critical role in the restructuring of healthcare services. Through its work, the Centre thus seeks to ensure that the provincial and federal decision-making bodies in the healthcare system take into consideration women's experiences, particularly regarding home care and services.

The Centre's contribution to the development of women-sensitive policies is beginning to be felt. For example, in part due to CESAF's participation in public hearings held by the Régie régionale de la santé et des services sociaux de Montré-Centre on the reorganization of healthcare services, the importance fo a gender-based analysis of programs and policies adopted by the Régie was mentioned in the final document. CESAF is continuing to work with the Régie to ensure that this principale be intergrated into all Montreal-area programs and services. The Centre is also pursuing this initiative with the Régie régionale de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal-Centre to ensure that Montréal healthcare institutions integrate this basic principle into their operations.

Despite its invaluable contributions, the Centre's funding by Health Canada is not guaranteed past 2002. The Centre's efforts to date deserve recognition well into the second millennium. Therefore, with a view to ensuring its survival, the Centre is working to enhance its credibility and acknowledgement of its contribution by producing tangible results that enhance women's health.
