The Canadian Women's Health Network is a national bilingual organization that:
- promotes the advancement of the health of girls and women in Canada;
- provides access to information and resources related to women's health and health status;
- supports critical debate; and,
- facilitates networking.
We are seeking interested individuals from across Canada to serve as members of our governing Board.
The Canadian Women's Health Network is a network of individuals, groups, organizations, and institutions concerned with women's health. We believe that health is a human right that eludes many women and girls, due to factors such as poverty, mal-distribution of society's resources, policies and dwindling resources allocated to health and social services. The CWHN has endorsed and adopted as our guiding philosophical framework the principles expressed in the following documents:
- World Health Organization's (WHO) definition of health
- Ottawa Charter on Health Promotion
- International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action
- Platform for Action on the Status of Women developed by the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 1995 [Beijing].
The CWHN is guided by a women-centred, holistic vision of women's health. We recognise and respect the diverse realities of women's lives, and take an active stance in ending discrimination based on gender, race, age, language, religion, sexual orientation or ability. Board members are expected to be able to support these principles and values and the CWHN mission statement.
Qualifications:
- Interest and experience in women's health and health care;
- Experience and/or interest in the governance of a developing national voluntary health organization with charitable status;
- Ability to reflect women's health issues from the perspective of a broad and diverse range of communities in an equitable, comprehensive and open manner;
- Ability to contribute 6-12 hours per month to participate in governance and networking activities;
- Be at least 18 years of age.
Experience in fundraising, law, accounting or with a diversity of women's health issues would be a definite asset. The CWHN takes its equity policies seriously. Aboriginal women, women from visible and language minorities, lesbians and bi-sexual women and women with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
The term of office for Board members is 2 years. Board members are expected to take an active role in committees of the Board. The majority of Board and committee meetings are conducted by teleconference with most other work conducted by email. This is not a salaried position but approved direct expenses related to the position will be reimbursed.
To apply, please forward your resume along with any other information that would provide relevant details about your qualifications and interests to the Chair of the Nominations Committee to the address below. Please provide the names of two character or business references. They will be contacted by a member of the Nominations Committee.
